CES Licensure courses for educators and aspiring educators are convenient, engaging, and rigorous. Our hybrid-online course format includes selected Saturday face-to-face sessions, combined with online work, for the best fit with your schedule. Courses can be taken for graduate credit, PDPs, or in order to work toward your initial or additional license.

This course is designed so that teachers will become knowledgeable about the theory and practice of standards-based curriculum and assessment.

This course brings together candidates from Teacher Licensure and Administrative Leadership programs to examine issues facing educators today.

Positive Behavior Supports

This course provides an overview of the research and best practices for assessing; planning; problem-solving; and implementing individual, classroom and school-wide positive behavior support.

Specialized Reading Approaches

The focus of this course is on the variety of instructional reading programs utilized in many of today’s schools.

Teaching for Math Understanding

This course focuses on the curriculum and pedagogy of standards-based mathematics. Participants engage in problem-solving and representing the mathematical concepts and professional teaching standards of mathematics using a range of tools.

Theory and Practice of Acquiring a Second Language

This course provides participants with an introduction to the field of second language acquisition (SLA), with a specific focus on issues that directly impact the second language classroom.

Theory and Practice in Sheltering Instruction

This course is an introduction to the theories and sheltered strategies for teaching content and grade level subject matter to English Language Learners.

Understanding Differences and Disabilities

In this course, participants will examine the needs, levels of functioning, and contributions of individuals with special needs.

Working with the Struggling Reader

This course is designed to give the participant knowledge of the reading process, reading disabilities, and reading approaches and of the components of the language arts curriculum.

Educational Technology for Administrators

This course introduces administrators to the multi-faceted role of technology in education. The use of technology as a change agent in schools is explored as well as the use of technology to facilitate data analysis and efficient management of administrative functions.

Law, Ethics, and the Educator

Constitutional and statutory provisions governing a public school system are examined on local, state and national levels. Particular attention will be paid to the legal and ethical parameters of compliance of federal and state guidelines, legislation, judicial decisions, and precedent-setting cases generated to meet the needs of diverse student populations.

The focus of this course is the assessment of what students identified with reading and/or writing difficulties understand about the reading and writing processes.

Educational Research

Course participants will engage in the scientific reasoning process and reflect upon this process as it relates to the educator’s role. 

Introduction to Educational Technology

In this course, we will provide an introduction to educational technology that aligns to state and national standards in technology integration.

Language Development and Literacy

This course addresses normal development of expressive and receptive language in terms of phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics. It focuses on the language performance exhibited by different populations of children/adults with disabilities.

Literacy Learning for Pre-Adolescents and Adolescents

This course is designed to assist participants in teaching intermediate students, including English language learners, to read and write and to use literacy skills for a variety of purposes.

SEI Teacher Endorsement

This course equips participants with strategies to support ELLs’ access to content instruction through evidence-based reading, writing and vocabulary interventions. Successful completion of this course qualifies participants to apply for the Sheltered English Instruction (SEI) Endorsement.

Differentiating Instruction Through Word Study

This online word study workshop will afford participants the opportunity to become familiar with the continuum of word study skills which form the foundation of reading.

Academic Language

Participants in this course will use a variety of strategies and resources (including tech tools), to develop the core skills and expertise needed for educators to support students academic language development and close the opportunity gap.

Capstone: Implementing Best Practices

This course is the culminating experience for candidates in the M.Ed. in Curriculum & Teaching. Candidates will implement educational concepts and practices gained through earlier coursework by designing, implementing and presenting findings for an action research project.

Learning Disabilities and Instructional Techniques

The course is a survey of the general field of learning disabilities, including history and definitions, as well as assessment and remediation. The course looks at the underlying neuro-developmental functions of the brain and how differences in brain functioning can lead to difficulties learning in school and impact job performance.

Literacy Learning for Younger Children

This course provides students with an in-depth study of elements of an early literacy instructional framework, with a focus on the reading components. 

Theory and Practice in Fostering Literacy in a New Language

This course provides participants with an introduction to pedagogical approaches to reading and writing instruction for both English Language Learners and students of foreign or world languages.

Working with the Range of Students in Mathematics

This course focuses on teaching mathematics to diverse students, including, but not limited to, those with special needs.

Policy, Politics, and Curriculum

This course is designed to assist aspiring administrators in developing a deeper understanding of the curriculum and the myriad forces that shape it. Curriculum is not developed in a vacuum—it is shaped by state and federal policy and mandates, school committee priorities and resources, educational research, and the involvement and capacity of the teachers.

The Culture of the School

This course will introduce candidates to the many and varied roles and responsibilities of a building administrator. Candidates will self-reflect on their own leadership style in order to better understand their approach to managing and addressing the day-to-day expectations and routines that will ensure effective and efficient school operations.

SEI Admin Endorsement

The purpose of this course is to prepare MA school administrators with the knowledge and skills necessary to be effective reviewers and instructional leaders of educators who teach English language learners (ELLs) so that our growing population of ELLs can access curriculum, achieve academic success, and contribute their multilingual and multicultural resources as participants and future leaders in the 21st century global economy.

Writing Best Practice IEPs/Measurable Goals

Participants will learn best practices for IEP writing pages 1-8; DESE record review citations; DESE requirements for measurable goals that include a condition, targeted behavior and performance criteria with built-in practice and feedback; and an overview of standards-based IEP goals.
