Transforming Education for Social Justice Conference

The Transforming Education for Social Justice Conference is a regional conference that brings together people in Western Massachusetts who are interested in social justice and equity in K-12 schools, early childhood classrooms, and the surrounding communities.

Participants will co-create a space for young people, educators, activists, administrators, and scholars to connect and network, share and learn, dream and envision possibilities for developing education as a tool for equity and social justice. In this space, participants will have the opportunity to examine the specific regional challenges that young people are facing in our education system which are central to their lives and to the vitality of our communities. As we examine the challenges, we will also look to each other for visions and practices that can guide our work towards transforming education for social justice.

Save the Date

The next Transforming Education for Social Justice Conference will take place March 14, 2020, at the Integrative Learning Center at UMass Amherst.

Theme

Build Knowledge, Raise Consciousness, Take Action. We see ourselves as part of a large community where we all have something to teach, and we all have something to learn. This year’s theme invites presenters to understand their participation as part of a continuous process of knowledge-sharing. Our hope is that by engaging in this process everyone attending the conference will increase their level of awareness and be moved to take the necessary actions to transform education to be a tool for mutual liberation, connection, healing, joy, justice, and equity.

Call for Proposals

Proposals must be submitted by January 3, 2020.

Workshop selections will be announced by January 31, 2020.

Each session should be designed to support young people and people with marginalized identities to be central to the conversation, both in terms of content and process during the session. For example, adults and young people are often used to being in a certain dynamic where adults lead and young people are meant to listen and follow. We encourage presenters and participants to transform this dynamic in the conference space and beyond. Each session is scheduled for 1.5 hours to give facilitators and participants the opportunity to engage with the session topic. All sessions should address the theme of the conference: Build Knowledge, Raise Consciousness, Take Action.

Please note: young people are encouraged to lead and/or attend all sessions.
