Mount Tom Academy

An Alternative Learning Program for High School Students

Mount Tom Academy at Holyoke Community College is an alternative learning program for high school students at risk of dropping out of school. The program is designed specifically to serve students who have been unsuccessful in traditional high school settings and may benefit from alternative placement. Students placed at the program will eventually return to their sending schools, or finish their high school work at Mount Tom Academy and then graduate from their sending school.

The program offers an open, diverse environment that challenges students while providing a high level of support. It employs self-directed learning methods that engage reluctant learners in their own educational process, removes students’ objections to studying and learning, and promotes achievement among students who would otherwise be likely to drop out of school.

The Mount Tom Academy program can provide:

  • an alternative pathway to a high school diploma for disconnected youth
  • trauma-informed instruction
  • personalized instruction designed to maximize academic achievement
  • social emotional learning support for students experiencing mental health and behavioral health challenges
  • evidence-based instructional approaches in a small setting
  • frequent one-on-one support
  • opportunities to succeed in advanced courses and dual enrollment
  • blended learning instruction in standards aligned courses
  • an opportunity for students who are academically strong but struggle with self-motivation and personal accountability

CES Schools and services prohibit discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex, gender identity, religion, national origin, or sexual orientation and ensures that all students have equal rights of access and equal enjoyment of the opportunities, advantages, privileges, and courses of study.
