Talk Math

Summer Academy

In mathematics classrooms, lively discussions support student learning by building a community that encourages learning. Through talking about math, students clarify their own understanding and notice relationships between their own thinking and the ideas, strategies, and representations of others. Listening to student talk also supports teachers as they work to assess what students do or do not understand. Talking math gives students and teachers more to observe, more to listen to, and more chances to participate in mathematical thinking. Participants will come out of this workshop with strategies and tools for fostering their students’ ability to engage in meaningful mathematical discourse.
