Summer Intensive on Operations and Algebraic Thinking

What does algebraic thinking look like in the early grades? To answer this question, the Collaborative for Educational Services invites pre-k through grade 4 teachers from the Northampton, Belchertown, Easthampton, and Hampshire Regional districts to join Pat DeAngelis and Jan Szymaszyk for a summer institute that will focus on Operations and Algebraic Thinking.

During the summer session, teachers will enhance their ability to notice generalizations about the behavior of the operations, bring student attention to these generalizations, and support their students in learning to articulate, represent, and prove general claims. Additionally, teachers will enhance their ability to listen to their students’ mathematical ideas, promote mathematical discussions in the classroom, and establish a classroom community that invites students to share their thinking and build on the ideas of others.
