Fraction Addition and Subtraction

Math

Description

When the children’s mathematical world expands beyond whole numbers, the ideas they have learned about the operations of multiplication and division need to be revised. In order to successfully engage with the concepts and procedures behind multiplication and division with fractions students need to explore problem contexts that are meaningful and that will allow them to explore new ideas and processes. To move from memorization to meaning, students need experiences with visual and concrete representations that illustrate the algorithms for multiplying and dividing.

Participants in this workshop will:

  • Engage in tasks that build a foundation for understanding the concepts underlying the procedures used to multiply and divide fractions;
  • Explore a range of models and representations students might use to create meaning
  • Clarify the connections between language and representation
  • Support a wide range of learners who can flexibly problem solve.

This workshop is part of the Exploring Concepts in Math Series.
