Barbara is an Instruction Specialist at CES, and our Lead Instructor at Mount Tom Academy. A veteran teacher with certifications in ESL K-12, English and History, she has experience in urban, rural and alternative settings. She earned a B.A. from Temple University and a M.Ed. from New York University.

Cheney was named a Summit Learning Fellow for her work with the Mount Tom Academy program - a CES alternative learning program for high school students. Cheney incorporates the Summit Learning personalized approach to teaching and learning into her work. The approach is built on support from a caring mentor, life skills that students can apply to real-world situations, and an ability to use self-direction to develop self-confidence, understand their own strengths and weaknesses, and prepare themselves for life after graduation. As a Fellow, Cheney mentors other teachers, acts as a resource, and helps them to engage their students as she has done successfully for over three years.
