Mount Tom Academy

An Alternative Learning Program for High School Students

Mount Tom Academy at Holyoke Community College is an alternative learning program for high school students at risk of dropping out of school. The program is designed specifically to serve students who have been unsuccessful in traditional high school settings and may benefit from alternative placement. Students placed at the program will eventually return to their sending schools, or finish their high school work at Mount Tom Academy and then graduate from their sending school.

The program offers an open, diverse environment that challenges students while providing a high level of support. It employs self-directed learning methods that engage reluctant learners in their own educational process, removes students’ objections to studying and learning, and promotes achievement among students who would otherwise be likely to drop out of school.

Throughout its 15-year history, Mt. Tom Academy has provided a safe, flexible environment for learning and has meant the difference between success and high school failure for more than 125 young men and women from 15 area high schools.
