Few books about the Civil Rights Movement focus on examples from outside the South. Especially during January and February and in the spring, many teachers share books about Jim Crow and Civil Rights with their students, but they are almost exclusively Southern stories.
In this workshop we will explore how we can bring stories about segregation and civil rights struggles that occurred in the North, West, and Midwest into our teaching. We will share examples, have discussions, and brainstorm ideas while browsing books and other materials that participants may want to use with their students. Participants will have an opportunity to begin thinking about how they can integrate the nationwide story into their curriculum and instruction.
