Developing Mathematics Education

CES consultants partner with teachers and school leaders to improve student learning in mathematics. CES trainers offer deep math curriculum and content to help educators align math instruction to the Common Core Standards, particularly for struggling learners.

Our Approach

Math services focus on principles that are grounded in research and many years of successful practice:

  • A thorough and ongoing assessment of school data with a team of educators highlights underlying barriers to student achievement.
  • When teachers understand the cognitive and cultural experiences of their students, they are better able to help them overcome barriers to learning.
  • Teachers who have a wide range of curricular tools are better able to differentiate learning and teach struggling math students.
  • Opportunities for collaboration and reflection create a learning community that promotes increased learning and continuous improvement of instruction.

Professional Development Workshops

We offer open enrollment Professional Development workshops on a range of topics relevant to Math teachers during the school year. A list of currently scheduled workshops is displayed on the right side of this page.

Site-based Professional Development and Coaching

Research shows that teachers who have a deep understanding of the mathematics they teach are better able to translate their knowledge into effective instruction.

We offer site-based professional development in the following areas:

  • Operations and algebraic thinking
  • Measurement and data
  • Geometry
  • Numbers and operations - Fractions
  • Algebra
    • Expressions and equations
    • Functions
  • Statistics and probability
  • Number and quantity
    • The real number system
    • The complex number system
  • Modeling
  • Integrating the standards for mathematical practice into classroom practice.

Assessment and Data Services

We will help to prepare teachers to use a variety of strategies to assess student learning in order to guide instruction (formative assessment) or to evaluate instructional success (summative assessment). Standards-based lesson plan design emphasizes assessment planning (as opposed to activity planning). We focus our student assessment work on measurable outcomes.

Through our professional development, we model effective assessment techniques, including:

  • On-the-spot assessment
  • Looking at Student Work
  • Using rubrics and checklists to track progress and assess data
  • Assessing problem-solving skills
  • Assessing evidence of learning in struggling math students
  • Using tiered approaches (Response to Intervention, RTI)
  • Culturally responsive assessment strategies
