Developmental Screening and Formative Assessment

Within the CES Early Childhood department, we provide training for early educators and directors who want to increase their knowledge and skills in assessing children's growth and development. We provide training and technical assistance on developmental screening, and have courses we can offer upon request on many subjects related to formative assessment, observation and documentation. All of our courses are aligned with the QRIS Curriculum and Learning Standard and the Core Competency Observation, Assessment and Documentation and provide continuing education credit (CEUs).

Resources on Observation, Formative Assessment, and Developmental Screening

Please visit our Resources Page for links to online resources, articles, books, and videos on the topics of Formative Assessment, Observation and Documentation and Developmental Screening.

Early educators and directors who are looking for additional courses in observation and formative assessment are encouraged to contact EEC Educators and Providor Support (EPS) staff in their region of the state.

CES offered training and support to Massachusetts early childhood educators in screening and educational assessment of children from infancy through kindergarten through a statewide grant that we administered from 2014 to 2018. While this grant has concluded, we continue our focus on the importance of helping educators get to know children and families so that they can best meet their needs.

Services provided by this program are funded by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC).
