On June 26, 2018, the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education is expected to adopt the 2018 Massachusetts History and Social Science Curriculum Framework. To support the implementation of the standards, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (ESE), in partnership with the Collaborative for Educational Services (CES) is holding an informational session for educator preparation programs (including colleges and universities) and professional development providers for K-12 teachers. The purpose of the session is to build capacity to provide high-quality adult learning in understanding and teaching the new standards.

Participants will:

  • Gain an overview of the major changes to the anticipated new 2018 Massachusetts History and Social Science Curriculum Framework, including (but not limited to) the increased emphasis on civics education.

  • Learn about the content and objectives of the 2018 Civics Education Institute, an event that will support 250 educators from districts across the Commonwealth in transitioning to teach the new standards.

  • Gain an introduction to resources that will support implementation of the standards, including the Massachusetts Civics and Social Science Education Network website (currently in development) and the events planned for 2018-2019 to provide additional support for implementation.
