Librarian and Media Specialists PLC

This professional learning community is for anyone acting in the librarian/media specialist role in a school in Massachusetts. Librarians are often the only person in their role in the building and in some districts, they might be the only person in the entire district. This learning community provides a space where you can find support from other librarians and develop your own ideas for engaging in promising practices in the field. 

This PLC is very participant-driven and specific topics addressed in the group are guided by the needs and interests of participants, with facilitation provided by Suzanne Judson-Whitehouse.

Topics discussed may include:

  • Challenges faced by librarians
  • Examining problems of practice as a group and strategizing potential solutions
  • Diverse books in the library
  • Addressing the needs of students of the global majority in the library
  • Meeting the needs of LGBTQ+ students in the library
  • Designing a physical space to support student engagement in the library
  • Advocacy for library funding and programs
  • Collaboration with classroom teachers
  • Resources available to Massachusetts libraries

2020-2021 School Year

Due to concerns about COVID-19 exposure and the on-going pandemic health crisis, Library/Media Specialist PLC meetings will be held remotely using Zoom.  Normally, in-person meetings are held from 4:30 to 6:30pm at the main CES Offices at 97 Hawley Street in Northampton, but remote meetings will be limited to an hour.  We value the in-person experience and will balance this preference with safety concerns. When the public health situation changes, we will work as a group to develop a plan for returning to in-person sessions. 

The first session of the 2020-2021 School Year will be held via Zoom on Thursday, September 24, 2020 from 5 to 6pm. The following sessions will be scheduled as a group and will be held monthly.


PDPs can be earned by registering for the school year and completing a demonstration of learning, which will be provided upon request by the facilitator. 

PLC Cancellations

Cancellations will be communicated by the facilitator by email before noon on the day of the meeting. Please check your email before the meeting to confirm that there has not been a cancellation.

  • Suzanne Judson-Whitehouse

    Suzanne Judson-Whitehouse is the Director of Licensure & Credentialing at the Collaborative for Educational Services. Suzanne oversees the Teacher Licensure and Administrative Leadership programs and is part of the CES ISTE Certification Team. She also co-leads the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Team of the Diverse Teacher Workforce Coalition and is Site Coordinator for Reading Recovery in Western Massachusetts. Her interests lie in the fields of blended learning, technology integration in K-12 schools, makerspaces and creativity in education, games and gamification, and adult pedagogy. She has facilitated workshops and professional learning communities in history, literacy, K-12 libraries, and technology integration.
