This two-semester practicum course provides a capstone experience in which candidates apply, broaden and deepen understandings of the DESE administrative leadership indicators developed in the eight preceding courses. The practicum builds on the prior courses emphasizing “in-the-trenches” skills and strategies. The supervised practicum is the capstone experience in the educational leadership and management licensure program.

Candidates seeking initial licensure as School Principal/Assistant School Principal and Supervisor/Director will complete a practicum in the role under the guidance of a supervising practitioner, an administrator experienced in the role of the license sought. In addition to the field experience, practicum students will participate in a seminar that explores issues arising in the practicum and deepens understanding of key issues related to the four standards of the ESE model rubrics for administrative leadership:

  • Standard I: Instructional Leadership
  • Standard II: Management & Operations
  • Standard III: Family and Community Engagement
  • Standard IV: Professional Culture

Candidates seeking initial licensure as School Principal/Assistant School Principal (Levels: PreK-6; 5-8; 9-12) or initial licensure as Supervisor/Director (Levels: Dependent on prerequisite license) will complete 375 supervised practicum hours in the role of the license sought. All candidates will complete four performance tasks: Operations Performance Task and MA-PAL Tasks 2-4.

This course may be taken either as part of a Licensure Program or as an individual course for PDPs. Graduate Credit through Fitchburg State University is available at additional cost; Master’s Degree and CAGS options are available. Click here to learn more about Graduate Credit.
