This course brings together candidates from Teacher Licensure and Administrative Leadership programs to examine issues facing educators today. Focal points will include curricular and instructional decisions, legislative mandates, school financing, technological advances, diversity, special education, and related contemporary topics in education. Examining personal biases and clarifying individual perspectives to develop professional empathy will be an integral part of the course.

This course asks participants to analyze the philosophical underpinnings of the common issues that affect the instructional practices of teachers and the decision made by instructional leaders. This course focuses on relevant topics that are currently shaping education today. In doing so, participants will identify and analyze the effect of these issues on the stakeholders and the eventual outcome of the interplay between instructional practices and instructional leadership.


This course may be taken either as part of a Licensure Program or as an individual course for PDPs. Graduate Credit through Fitchburg State University is available at additional cost; Master’s Degree and CAGS options are available. Click here to learn more about Graduate Credit.

This course is required for teacher candidates who are pursuing a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction through FSU.

Cost and Registration

This course is included in your Masters plan of study if you are enrolled with Fitchburg State. The course may also be taken individually for professional development and/or license renewal. The tuition cost for all registrants is $875. Click here for more information about tuition and fees.

Course Structure, Dates and Locations

This is course is fully online and will run from May 11, 2022 through August 9, 2022. The course will also include a synchronous online session, to be scheduled by the course instructor.

  • Jeff Parks

    Jeff Parks is the Principal of the Parker Middle School in Chelmsford, Massachusetts.  Jeff has taught in the Waltham and Chelmsford school districts, and is in his 8th year of school administration.   Jeff earned a BS from Bridgewater State College, M.Ed. from Cambridge College, and an Ed.D. from Northeastern University.

A maximum class size is set for each course and registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. If the number of registrations for a course exceeds the maximum seats available, we will inform you of available options.

If course enrollment is too low to be able to conduct a quality learning experience, options will be made available that may include taking the course in another location or semester, or participating in face-to-face sessions virtually, where students see, hear, and interact with the class through the web.

Coursework and Attendance

Attendance at all face-to-face sessions is mandatory. Missing a face-to-face session will reduce your grade by one letter grade. If you know you cannot attend one of the face-to-face sessions for this course, please consider taking this course the next time it is offered.

All coursework is due by the course end date.

Inclement Weather

If a Saturday class is cancelled, the class will meet on the following day, Sunday. If a Sunday class is cancelled, the class will not be rescheduled. Students may receive information from their instructor regarding alternate assignments.
