Tech Petting Zoo

With hundreds of technology devices already on the market and more being released, the task of choosing the best tools for the job can be overwhelming. Educators face the additional challenge of knowing how to use technology in the classroom to help their students learn.

The mere presence of technology in the classroom isn't a stand-in for the best content or the most skilled educator. Rather, the relationship between technology and education is a two-way street. Just as teachers may use technology to boost student engagement and achievement, technology needs teachers who understand the tools and proven methods for deploying them in the classroom.

That's why, as part of the Collaborative's commitment to supporting teachers, our Professional Development and Technology Departments have started a zoo...a Technology Petting Zoo, that is!

What is a Tech Petting Zoo?

The idea for a Tech Petting Zoo grew out of several conversations with tech directors, teachers, and librarians. All three groups saw a need for educators to have the opportunity to explore new technolgy tools first-hand and, most importantly, to have access to experts who could help them see the powerful possibilities of using these tools in classrooms and schools.

The Collaborative's Tech Petting Zoo is designed to generate excitement among local educators about using technology in the classroom to further their students' educational goals. It brings together K - 12 educators, administrators, and technology coordinators and directors from public and private schools throughout Hampshire and Franklin counties, and connects them with experts and other local educators who have experience using technology tools in the classroom.

Over the course of a few hours, participants gain hands-on experience with technology tools as well as guidance and suggestions for using tools to effectively engage students in the curriculum across all grade levels and subject areas. Demonstrations offer concrete examples of classroom and technology integration, and technology vendors are on hand to answer questions and highlight features of their hardware and software products.

Participants leave the petting zoo knowing how to find and use the devices and tools featured at the event, and equipped with creative classroom applications.
