Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure

Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure

The Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure (MTEL) is an important component of the licensure process. Successful completion of the Communication and Literacy MTEL is required for admission to all CES Licensure programs, and licensure-specific tests must be passed before cadidates can begin the Practicum. These tests are offered year-round at locations throughout Massachusetts and are designed to test candidates' communication skills as well as their knowledge of subject matter in the licensure area. They consist of a combination of multiple choice and open-response items.

To learn more about the specific MTEL requirements for your area of licensure, go to the Teacher Licensure Programs page and select the license you are seeking.

The MTEL website features a variety of resources to support your preparation for the MTEL, including:

  • Practice tests (for most test subjects)
  • Video tutorials
  • Study support materials
  • Test-taking strategies

Please visit the MTEL Test Information page for more information about required tests and when and where tests are offered.
