Consulting, Assessment and Program Development
The Center for English Language Education (CELE) specializes in customized consulting services and solutions to districts, organizations and agencies. We use a comprehensive whole-child, whole-school, and whole-community approach to create a better learning experience for both students and professionals. Specifically, CELE focuses on student evaluation and performance, curriculum development and delivery, active parent involvement, and programming that is aligned with state and national frameworks and regulations.
A core mission of CELE is to provide a range of consulting, coaching, and professional development activities that encourage collaboration among educators. ESL Licensure offered through CES Licensure Programs and Professional Development programming in English Language Learning encourages a whole student, whole school, whole community response to the growing number of English Learners.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Category Trainings (Massachusetts)
The laws and regulations for teaching public school English Learners in Massachusetts require content teachers to shelter instruction for its ELs. CELE provides approved professional development in the requisite categories put forth by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Category trainings are scheduled throughout the year at the Collaborative's Conference Center in Northampton. The programs can also be presented at your site.
- Category 1: Introduction to the Principles of Second Language Acquisition
- Category 2: Introduction to the Principles of Sheltering Content Instruction
- Category 3: Assessing English Language Learners for Instruction [MELA-O] (Training and Re-Training)
- Category 4: Introduction to Teaching & Assessing Reading & Writing for English Language Learners
Coaching
Coaching enables educators to understand student learning from a linguistic, cultural, and cognitive perspective and to provide appropriate instructional responses. CELE coaching includes intentives with teachers, peer observation, student observation, and demonstration lessons.
Institutes and Seminars for Administrators and Educators
Seminars for teachers and administrators are scheduled throughout the year at the CES Conference Center in Northampton. Programs include our popular administrator institute for leaders of English Learner programming as well as our institute for speech and language pathologists on identifying and working with ELs with learning differences and disabilities using a Response to Intervention (RTI) model. All our institutes and seminars are designed to create a shared vision of achievement and can be presented at your site. Courses may be taken for professional development points; some programs also offer optional graduate credit.
Teaching
CELE can assist with recruiting, preparing and furnishing licensed ESL teachers.
Professional Learning Community in ELL
Through open discussion and learning projects, our Professional Learning Community in English Language Learning works to address the needs of our students and school community. Meetings, which are held at the CES main office in Northampton, MA, are free of charge and all leaders in English Language Education are welcome. Meetings are held at CES during the school year; our Annual Publisher's Fair is held in February or March.

ESL TEACHER LICENSURE
The Collaborative provides an Initial licensure program in English as a Second Language at sites throughout Massachusetts. PDPs, graduate credit, Master's Degree and CAGS options are available. For information and application materials, visit: TeachInMass.org.
