Arts Integration

When teaching subjects other than art, arts integration means arranging for students to use art techniques to explore or demonstrate their understanding of course content.

UTL residencies offer a new way to focus and engage students. They may be especially beneficial to students with special needs and ELL students providing new ways to connect with state standards. Each residency is comprised of 10 contact days and is offered free of charge to Massachusetts DYS school facilities. For partnering teachers, this is not only a new way to engage their students, it is also a unique opportunity to develop their own professional development while on the job and in the classroom, where they can earn PDP’s if desired.

Department of Youth Services Educational Philosophy

DYS is committed to providing an educational program for all students in the DYS system that is in compliance with the Massachusetts state curriculum standards. The instruction, assessment, and the DYS Instructional Guides are organized around key themes and essential learning outcomes that are modified for various student placements (detention, assessment and treatment). All education is delivered with an understanding of the diversity of the student population; curriculum, instruction and assessment planning include components of differentiation, respect for cultural and linguistic diversity, and a commitment to enhancing students’ literacy and numeracy skills.
