Teaching American History: Emerging America
This three-year program deepens and enriches teaching and learning of American History through a two-week summer institute and year-round staff development opportunities. The program is conducted in partnership with the University of Massachusetts, the Historic Northampton Museum and Education Center, and the Springfield Armory National Historic Site. UMass Department of History faculty have mobilized a wealth of local historical resources, including prominent historians of Western Massachusetts and U.S. history. Teams of participating teachers also work with the UMass Center for Educational Software Development to engage students in presenting the history of their communities on the World Wide Web. Historic Northampton and the Springfield Armory interpret related documents and artifacts through on-line case studies. The University of Massachusetts School of Education provides crucial program support. Graduate credit is available for year-round participation including the summer institute. Teachers from across Western Massachusetts participate at no charge ? even receiving stipends ? thanks to a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
